Mount Pentelicus
Mount Pentelicus, situated northeast of Athens, is globally renowned for its pristine white marble, which has been quarried since antiquity. Reaching a maximum elevation of 1,109 meters at its peak, Pyrgari, it dominates the northeastern portion of the Attica basin. The famous Pentelic marble was the primary material used for the construction of the Parthenon and many other iconic monuments of ancient Greece. The ancient quarries and the Davelis Cave on its southern flank are significant archaeological sites, showcasing classical engineering techniques. At the mountain's base lies the Monastery of Penteli, one of Greece's wealthiest and most important religious institutions, founded in 1578. Geologically, the massif is composed almost entirely of metamorphic rocks, specifically the prized crystalline marble. Despite environmental challenges from wildfires and urban sprawl, the mountain still features patches of pine forests and diverse Mediterranean scrubland. Today, Pentelicus is a favored spot for hikers and mountain bikers, offering expansive views over the Greek capital and the Aegean Sea.
