💡 Tips
- Visit the castle ruins in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the large tour buses coming from Rhodes Town.
- Entry to the castle is free; the climb up the stone steps from the parking area takes about 10 minutes and is quite manageable.
- Combine your trip with a stop in the nearby village of Siana, famous for its thyme honey and Souma grape brandy.
- Monolithos has very little light pollution, making it one of the best spots on the island for stargazing at night.
- A rental car is essential for this part of Rhodes as public bus services are very infrequent.
🍽 Food
In the traditional village tavernas, try the slow-cooked local goat meat, usually prepared with mountain herbs.
Classic Rhodian chickpea fritters seasoned with plenty of cumin and mint, excellent as a traditional appetizer.
Highly aromatic regional honey, often served drizzled over local yogurt or fresh loukoumades.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A strong local grape brandy sold directly in the village or in Siana; it's the most authentic mountain souvenir.
Look for roadside stalls selling extra virgin olive oil harvested from the surrounding mountain slopes.
A pebble beach below the village with sea caves and a very peaceful atmosphere, rarely visited by crowds.
The small whitewashed chapel inside the castle ruins provides a serene spot for reflection with a view.

Monolithos is a tranquil and scenic village located on the western coast of Rhodes, far removed from the bustling tourist resorts of the east. The name "Monolithos" translates to "single rock," perfectly describing the massive geological formation that dominates the landscape. The village itself is composed of whitewashed stone houses and narrow alleys that embody traditional Greek island architecture, offering a peaceful retreat into authentic Rhodian life. The coastline around Monolithos is wild, rugged, and breath-taking. Unlike the highly organized sandy stretches elsewhere on the island, the beaches here offer raw natural beauty and seclusion. Visitors can explore the quiet shores of Alyki Beach and Κεραμενή, which provide peaceful swimming spots with crystal-clear waters. Nearby, the pebbly Fourni Beach is positioned beneath towering cliffs, offering dramatic scenery, fascinating rock formations, and a truly remote seaside experience. The absolute highlight of the area is the Venetian Castle of Monolithos, built in 1480 by the Knights of Saint John on a dizzyingly high rocky outcrop. Reaching the ruins requires climbing a steep staircase, but the panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the island of Halki are unparalleled. Below the castle, traditional tavernas serve local delicacies, making Monolithos an excellent destination for those seeking history, nature, and spectacular sunsets.
