Karpathos Town, also known as Pigadia, is the capital and primary port of Karpathos island in the Dodecanese. The town was constructed on the site of the ancient city of Potidaion, whose ruins are still visible today on the Vounos rock. The current urban landscape developed largely after 1892, when Pigadia was designated as the island's capital. The architecture displays a fusion of traditional Greek elements and Italian influences dating from the Italian occupation between 1912 and 1944. Numerous cafes and tavernas line the harbor promenade, forming the heart of the town's social life. The Archaeological Museum of Karpathos houses significant finds from the Minoan and Mycenaean periods, proving the region's long history of human settlement. As the island's primary economic hub, the town possesses a modern infrastructure and serves as the starting point for excursions to the traditional mountain villages of the north.
