Hydra Town, the only major settlement on the island of Hydra, is a national monument and one of Greece's best-preserved historic ensembles. Arranged in a crescent shape around the harbor, the town is defined by an absolute ban on motorized vehicles; transport is conducted solely via donkeys, mules, or on foot. The architecture is characterized by massive, fortress-like stone mansions (Archontika) from the 18th and 19th centuries, built by wealthy shipowners. These buildings testify to the era when Hydra was one of the most formidable maritime powers in the Mediterranean. The historic center houses the Cathedral of the Assumption, whose marble bell tower dominates the harbor skyline. Many of the grand mansions now function as museums, hotels, or art galleries, as the town has been a magnet for international artists and intellectuals since the 1960s. Steep, cobblestone alleys lead to viewpoints offering expansive vistas over the Saronic Gulf. Hydra Town maintains a timeless elegance and an extraordinary atmosphere of tranquility.
