Gortyn (Greece)

Weather…

Gortyn, located in the fertile Messara Valley of Crete, was one of the most powerful cities of antiquity and served as the capital of the province Creta et Cyrenaica during the Roman period. The archaeological site is world-famous primarily for the Gortyn Code, the oldest and most complete collection of Greek urban laws dating from the 5th century BC, inscribed into the walls of the later Odeon. Gortyn has a long history reaching back to Minoan times, but it experienced its golden age under the Romans, as evidenced by monumental buildings like the Praetorium, the theater, and the Temple of Apollo Pythios. Another significant monument is the 6th-century AD Basilica of Saint Titus, which commemorates the Christian mission to the island. Unlike Knossos, Gortyn was spared during the Roman conquest of Crete because it allied itself with the invaders. Today, visitors can walk through the olive groves where the scattered ruins lie and admire the impressive evidence of ancient legislation and administration.
