Fortezza of Rethymno (Greece)

Weather…

The Fortezza of Rethymno is one of the largest and most imposing Venetian fortifications in Greece, crowning the Paleokastro hill on the island of Crete. It was constructed between 1573 and 1580 by the Venetians to defend the city and its strategic port against Ottoman incursions and pirate raids. The fortress follows an irregular star-shaped plan with four bastions and three main gates, designed to withstand the artillery of the time. Inside the massive stone walls, which stretch for over 1,300 meters, the complex originally housed the Rector's palace, military barracks, ammunition stores, and a hospital. A prominent landmark within the walls is the Mosque of Sultan Ibrahim, featuring a large hemispherical dome; it was originally the Venetian Cathedral of San Nicolo before being converted after the Ottoman conquest in 1646. Today, the Fortezza is a major cultural site, hosting the Renaissance Festival in the summer and providing visitors with panoramic views of the Cretan Sea and the welcoming old town of Rethymno.
