Arkadi Monastery is an Orthodox monastery on the island of Crete and is considered one of the most significant symbols of Greek resistance against Ottoman rule. Built in the 16th century during the Venetian period, the monastery's architecture combines Renaissance and Baroque elements, which are particularly visible on the ornate facade of the main church. It gained worldwide fame through the events of the Cretan Revolt in 1866. On November 8 of that year, approximately 15,000 Ottoman soldiers besieged the monastery, where 943 people, including many women and children, had taken refuge. When the defense became hopeless, those inside chose death over captivity: they blew up the gunpowder magazine, claiming hundreds of lives. This heroic sacrifice sparked international outrage and drew the attention of world powers to Crete's plight, eventually paving the way for the island's independence. Today, Arkadi Monastery serves as a memorial and museum, where relics of the struggle and the remains of the gunpowder magazine can be visited.
