💡 Tips
- Aim to be at a seaside taverna at least 45 minutes before sunset; it's one of the best spots in Crete.
- Check the wind forecast; strong westerly winds can make the beach very sandy and the sea rough.
- Renting a car is highly recommended as public transport is limited and sights are spread out.
- Visit the main beach early in the morning to beat the day-trip crowds arriving from Chania.
- Drive 15 minutes south to Sfinari village if you want a completely quiet and unorganized beach.
🍽 Food
A traditional Cretan oven-baked dish made with zucchini, potatoes, and mizithra cheese.
Hard barley rusks topped with chopped tomatoes, local cheese, and plenty of olive oil.
Visit the tavernas near the small fishing harbor in the south for the best grilled octopus.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Pick up a jar from the small roadside stalls run by local producers on the way down to the beach.
This area produces world-class oil; look for locally pressed varieties in the village of Platanos.
Walk to the far northern end of the road to find these quiet ruins away from the beach music.
A series of small, rocky coves to the north of the main sands that remain peaceful even in August.

Falasarna, located on the far western edge of Crete, is celebrated globally for its sheer natural beauty and untamed coastal landscapes. The area seamlessly blends a rich historical heritage with a laid-back, modern beach culture. At the northern end of the bay lie the fascinating ruins of the ancient Hellenistic city of Falasarna, an important naval power of the past. The sweeping coastline is punctuated by incredible spots to swim. The massive Falasarna beach (also known as Falassarna) is home to fine golden and pinkish sand, incredibly clear turquoise waters, and plenty of space for windsurfing. A more low-key spot is the Tiny beach pink sand, which gives a secluded and magical experience, showing off the crushed shell phenomenon that Crete is famous for. Agriculture still plays a big part in the local economy, and the surrounding plains are dotted with olive groves and greenhouses. The local tavernas offer an authentic taste of the Cretan diet, featuring locally sourced vegetables, fresh fish, and exquisite olive oil. Watching the sun dip directly into the Mediterranean Sea from Falasarna is considered one of the best evening experiences in Greece.
