Balos Lagoon, located at the northwestern tip of Crete, features a landscape that rivals the Caribbean. The shallow, warm waters of the lagoon shimmer in countless shades of blue and emerald, while the sand often shows hints of pink from crushed shells. There are two ways to reach Balos: the comfortable option is taking a tour boat from Kissamos, which usually includes a stop at Imeri Gramvousa island to explore its Venetian fortress. Adventurous travelers can opt for the dirt road journey by car, followed by a 20-minute hike down the cliffside. The hiking trail provides the most spectacular panoramic views of the entire bay. While the lagoon is first-rate for families due to its shallow depth, the area outside the reef gives deeper waters for snorkeling. As there is very little natural shade and only one small snack bar, bringing sunscreen and plenty of water is essential.
