Agia Marina is the pretty administrative center of Leros island in the Dodecanese. Together with the adjacent settlements of Platanos and Panteli, it constitutes the functional heart of the island. The architecture of Agia Marina is distinguished by grand neoclassical mansions and traditional white houses extending from the harbor to Apitiki Hill. Overlooking the town is the Byzantine Castle of the Virgin Mary (Kastro Panagias), originally built in the 11th century and later expanded by the Knights of Saint John. The port of Agia Marina serves as a key arrival point for hydrofoils and ferries from across the Aegean. Historically, the region was of significant military importance due to its strategic location and deep natural bays, especially during World War II. Today, the town is a center for cultural activities and houses the Archaeological Museum of Leros, which displays artifacts ranging from prehistoric times to early Christianity.
