Wartburg Castle (Germany)

Weather…

Wartburg Castle near Eisenach is one of the most significant fortifications in Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. Founded in 1067, it served as the residence of the Landgraves of Thuringia and was the setting for the legendary Minstrels' Contest, which later inspired Richard Wagner. The castle achieved worldwide fame through Martin Luther, who sought refuge here in 1521/22 under the pseudonym 'Junker Jörg' and translated the New Testament into German in just eleven weeks. Another prominent chapter is the life of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, who lived at the castle in the 13th century and is revered for her charitable works. In 1817, the Wartburg Festival took place here, where German students demonstrated for unity and freedom, making the castle a symbol of the German national movement. The architecture of the Wartburg combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Historicist elements.
