Plön is located in the lake district of Holstein Switzerland in Schleswig-Holstein. The town is dominated by Plön Castle, a grand late-Renaissance structure built in the 17th century as the residence of the Dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Plön. It is one of the few hilltop castles in northern Germany. Plön is uniquely situated on a series of peninsulas and is almost entirely surrounded by water, most notably the Great Plön Lake, which at 28 square kilometers is the largest in the state. Beyond its administrative role as a district capital, Plön is a significant scientific hub, hosting the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. Tourism is a vital economic pillar, with the rolling glacial landscape providing excellent opportunities for sailing, cycling, and hiking. The historic old town, featuring the St. Nikolai Market Church and welcoming narrow alleys, reflects its long maritime and ducal history. Its location on the railway line between Kiel and Lübeck makes it an accessible and popular destination in the region.
