The small town of Lütjenburg is located in the Plön district, just a few kilometers inland from the Hohwacht Bay on the Baltic Sea coast. The settlement grew in the 12th century around the late-Romanesque St. Michaelis Church, whose massive brick tower continues to dominate the town center today. The historic market square features a Baroque town hall built in 1790 alongside well-preserved half-timbered and brick houses that reflect the region's agricultural heritage. Standing on the highest point in town, the Vogelberg, is the Bismarck Tower constructed in 1898. From its viewing platform, visitors can enjoy a sweeping panorama over the rolling moraine landscape of eastern Holstein all the way to the coastline. On the outskirts of the town lies a unique historical reconstruction: the Turmhügelburg, an accurate replica of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle from the era of Holstein's Christianization around 1200. Complete with residential structures, outbuildings, and wooden palisades, this complex provides a highly authentic glimpse into daily life during the High Middle Ages. Due to its proximity to the coast and forested surroundings, the town serves as a frequent starting point for cycling tours into the rural hinterland of the Kiel Bay.
