Glückstadt is an architectural gem on the Lower Elbe, fascinating visitors with its almost perfectly geometric street plan. The town was founded in 1617 by the Danish King Christian IV as a direct competitor to Hamburg, which is evidenced by the historic market square from which the streets radiate outwards in a star shape. Noble palaces and historic merchant houses line up around the center, telling the story of a rich Danish past. Glückstadt is famous nationwide for the original Glückstadt Matjes (soused herring); the annual Matjes festival in June attracts numerous food lovers to the town. A walk along the inner harbor, with its colorful house facades and anchored sailing ships, conveys a typical Northern German maritime atmosphere. The region is also highly well-suited for cyclists, as the popular Elbe Cycle Route runs directly past the town's dikes. Glückstadt beautifully combines royal history, long-standing culinary traditions, and a splendid location into a highly rewarding trip.
