Hemmoor is situated in the Cuxhaven district of Lower Saxony, positioned within the Elbe-Weser triangle. For over a century, the town's economy was dominated by the extraction of chalk for the production of Portland cement. The local cement factory, established in 1866, was once a world leader, providing materials for global landmarks like the Panama Canal. Following the factory's closure in 1983, the massive chalk pit filled with groundwater, creating the 'Kreidesee'. This 60-meter-deep lake is now internationally acclaimed as a premier diving site due to its exceptional visibility and submerged industrial artifacts. Hemmoor serves as a regional hub for trade and administration within the Samtgemeinde. The town is bordered by the River Oste, which features the historic transporter bridge in the adjacent village of Osten. Local history is meticulously preserved in the German Cement Museum. Economically, the town has transitioned from heavy industry to a service-oriented economy with a significant emphasis on technical tourism related to diving.
