Zerbst/Anhalt is a city of striking contrasts and deep historical resonance, known worldwide primarily as the childhood home of Princess Sophie Auguste Friederike of Anhalt-Zerbst, the woman who would later become Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. The former crown jewel of the city, the grand Zerbst Residential Castle, was heavily destroyed during World War II. Today, however, the imposing castle ruins have been expertly secured, and guided tours offer a moving and profound impression of its former Baroque splendor. Standing proudly in front of the castle is a modern monument dedicated to the famous Russian ruler. Despite the extensive wartime destruction, Zerbst has preserved remarkable historical relics, including large sections of the formidable medieval city walls with their massive gates and watchtowers. The Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church) remains standing as an awe-inspiring ruin and a powerful anti-war memorial. Another significant landmark is the Zerbst Roland statue in the market square, symbolizing civic freedom for centuries. Classical music lovers eagerly visit the city for the renowned Fasch Festival, dedicated to the celebrated Baroque court composer Johann Friedrich Fasch.
