Lutherstadt Eisleben is a town of immense historical importance in the eastern Harz foreland of Saxony-Anhalt. It is internationally famous as the birthplace and final resting place of Martin Luther, the key figure of the Protestant Reformation. His birth house and the house where he died are preserved as museums and were designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1996. Beyond its religious heritage, Eisleben is defined by its 800-year history of copper shale mining in the Mansfeld region, which shaped the town's social fabric and economic destiny for generations. The surrounding landscape is dotted with distinctive pointed slag heaps, standing as monuments to the area's mining past. The town's architecture features significant landmarks such as St. Andrew's Church, where Luther gave his last sermons. Modern Eisleben remains a vital cultural destination, successfully blending its industrial legacy with its role as a global center for Reformation history and scholarly research.
