Located in the Volcanic Eifel, the town of Prüm is dominated by the striking presence of the Sankt-Salvator-Basilika. The origins of the former Prüm Abbey date back to the 8th century, when it flourished as a major spiritual, cultural, and political center of the Carolingian Empire. The basilica houses a highly venerated relic, a sandal belonging to Jesus Christ, which established the town as a significant pilgrimage destination. Flanking the Baroque church are the imposing abbey buildings, designed by the celebrated architect Balthasar Neumann. The modern history of Prüm is heavily marked by the 1949 Prüm Explosion, a massive detonation of an underground ammunition dump in the Kalvarienberg hill that devastated much of the town; a memorial cross now stands at the site. Today, Prüm serves as a lively regional hub surrounded by the rugged, heavily forested ridges of the Schneifel. The town features the open-air Kruft Sculpture Park, blending contemporary art with nature. For outdoor enthusiasts, the surrounding Eifel landscape gives exceptional hiking and cycling. The Eifel-Ardennes cycle path, built along a disused railway line, provides a scenic and relatively flat route through the dramatic volcanic terrain.
