Widely recognized as the “Apple City” (Apfelstadt) of the Lower Rhine, Tönisvorst comprises the pleasant districts of St. Tönis and Vorst. The town is surrounded by Europe’s largest continuous apple-growing area, turning the landscape into a sweeping sea of white and pink blossoms during the spring, and offering an abundance of fresh, crisp fruit in the autumn. The historic Alter Markt (Old Market Square) in St. Tönis forms the lively heart of the town, featuring inviting cafes, local shops, and the impressive historic town hall. A unique and nostalgic experience for visitors is a ride on the “Schluff,” a historic steam locomotive that chugs its way from nearby Krefeld through the scenic countryside directly to Tönisvorst. In the Vorst district, ancient manor houses like the Mertenshof and Gelleshof reflect the rich agricultural heritage of the region. Tönisvorst is a haven for those looking to enjoy relaxed cycling along the expansive orchards, sample fresh local ciders and pastries, and experience the laid-back hospitality of the German Lower Rhine.
