Selm is located at the intersection of the industrial Ruhr area and the rural parklands of Münsterland. This unique position has shaped its identity and history. Originally a farming community, Selm saw a significant industrial boom at the start of the 20th century with the rise of coal mining. The Hermann coal mine was the town's economic engine until its closure in 1926. A cultural landmark of national significance is Cappenberg Castle, a former Premonstratensian monastery that later served as the retirement home for the Prussian reformer Freiherr vom Stein. Today, the castle is a hub for high-quality exhibitions and classical concerts. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Ternscher See lake is a major regional recreation spot for swimming, sailing, and camping. Over the last decades, Selm has developed into an attractive residential town, bridging the gap between the urban centers of Dortmund and Münster and the scenic tranquility of the Westphalian countryside.
