Kamen is a dynamic town situated at the eastern edge of the Ruhr district in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is widely known across Germany for the 'Kamener Kreuz', one of Europe's busiest motorway interchanges where the A1 and A2 motorways meet. However, the town's identity reaches back to the Middle Ages as a member of the Hanseatic League, reflected in its historic market square. Its most famous landmark is the leaning tower of the Pauluskirche, which tilted shortly after its construction in the 12th century. For decades, the local economy was dominated by coal mining, specifically the Monopol colliery, until its closure in 1983 triggered a successful structural shift towards logistics and service industries. The Seseke river, which flows through the heart of the town, has undergone extensive ecological restoration, providing residents with beautiful trails and parks. Kamen is also famous for hosting the international 'Kamen Kite' festival, attracting kite enthusiasts from across the globe to its vast open fields.
