Borken is a historic district town in the western Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, celebrated for its rich heritage and scenic landscapes. Known as the 'City of Towers', it still features five well-preserved watchtowers that were part of its medieval defensive walls. The town's jewel is the Gemen Castle, a striking moated fortress that has remained largely unchanged over centuries and now serves as a youth education center. Geographically, Borken is located within the Hohe Mark Nature Park, offering a network of premium cycling and hiking paths that showcase the typical Westphalian 'park landscape'. The local economy is diverse, supported by a mix of traditional crafts, medium-sized manufacturing companies, and a growing service sector. Cultural enthusiasts can visit the FAR (Forum Altes Rathaus), a modern cultural hub that hosts regional history exhibits and art galleries. With its blend of historical architecture, lively market squares, and proximity to the Dutch border, Borken remains a significant cultural and economic pillar in northwestern Germany.
