Arnsberg is located in the scenic Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia and is almost entirely enclosed by the bends of the Ruhr River. The city has a significant history as the residence of the Counts of Arnsberg and later as the seat of the Electors of Cologne, who governed the Duchy of Westphalia from here. Visible testimony to this era is found in the imposing castle ruins on the Schlossberg, which offer sweeping views over the Ruhr Valley. The historic old town charms visitors with its medieval structure, the neoclassical Prussian quarter, and the city's distinctive landmark, the Bell Tower. Today, Arnsberg serves as an important administrative center for the region as the seat of the district government. The surrounding nature of the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park provides numerous opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling. Arnsberg successfully blends its rich historical identity with a modern infrastructure and a high quality of life amidst a forested low mountain landscape.
