Barth is a historic Hanseatic town located on the southern shore of the Barther Bodden, a lagoon protected from the Baltic Sea. Known as the gateway to the scenic Darß peninsula, the town has a rich maritime heritage dating back to its founding in the mid-13th century. Its skyline is dominated by the massive St. Mary's Church, an outstanding example of Brick Gothic architecture. In the 16th century, Barth gained fame as a center of printing, producing the first complete Low German translation of the Bible. The town also embraces the myth of Vineta, a legendary wealthy city said to have been swallowed by the sea nearby. Today, Barth balances its historical roots with a thriving tourism sector, offering a well-equipped marina, traditional festivals, and easy access to the Vorpommern Lagoon Area National Park. The local economy is bolstered by small-scale manufacturing and a growing services sector catering to sailors and nature enthusiasts.
