Highlights of 2026

1

Northeim is located in the southern Lower Saxony uplands at the foothills of the Harz Mountains, looking back on a long history as a former Hanseatic city. The historic center is defined by a multitude of excellently preserved half-timbered houses constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. A particular architectural highlight is the old merchants' guildhall (Schütting) on the market square, as well as the St. Sixti Church, which houses a valuable historic organ in its interior. Large sections of the medieval town wall remain intact, encircling the historic core. Just beyond the town limits lies the Northeimer Seenplatte, an extensive network of lakes created through historical gravel mining operations. This popular recreation area gives visitors the chance to sail, swim, fish, or take walks along well-maintained circular paths. The river landscape of the Rhume also provides convenient conditions for nature enthusiasts. Thanks to its location near the highway and important railway lines, Northeim serves as a logistical hub while simultaneously acting as a tranquil starting point for exploring the forests of the Solling and the western foothills of the Harz Mountains.
