Einbeck is situated in the Leine Highlands of southern Lower Saxony, positioned between the Harz Mountains and the Solling hills. The city's primary claim to fame is its ancient brewing tradition; it is the birthplace of Bock beer, a style that takes its name from a corruption of 'Einbeck'. During the 14th and 15th centuries, it was a prosperous member of the Hanseatic League, a wealth still visible in its old town, which has over 400 richly decorated half-timbered houses. These buildings are unique for their high arched doorways designed to accommodate brewing carts. Today, Einbeck is also a pilgrimage site for car enthusiasts, home to the PS.SPEICHER, one of Europe's largest collections of vintage cars and motorcycles, housed in a historic granary. Furthermore, the city is a global center for agricultural innovation, particularly in seed production, housing the headquarters of the multinational firm KWS Saat.
