Gronau (Leine) was founded in the late 13th century by Bishop Siegfried II of Hildesheim as a fortified town to protect his episcopal territory. The town is strategically located in the fertile floodplains of the Leine River. A unique feature of Gronau is that its historic core is situated on a man-made island between the main river and a mill stream, giving it a distinctive character. The old town is home to well-preserved half-timbered houses that reflect its long history as a center for trade and crafts. The St. Matthew's Church, with its prominent tower, defines the town's skyline. For centuries, Gronau was a hub for linen weaving and agriculture. Today, it is a serene residential town offering a high quality of life, surrounded by the scenic Leine Uplands which provide numerous opportunities for hiking and water-based activities. As the administrative seat of the Leinebergland collective municipality, it serves as a central hub for the surrounding rural area.
