Elze is situated in the Leine Highlands within the Hildesheim district and possesses an exceptionally deep history. Around 800 AD, Charlemagne founded a missionary outpost here, which served as the precursor to the Diocese of Hildesheim before the episcopal see was moved. The Peter and Paul Church stands on the site of the original foundation, marking it as one of the oldest Christian sites in Northern Germany. Geographically, Elze is defined by the Leine river valley and the surrounding ridges, providing fertile soil and strategic advantages. During the 19th century, Elze emerged as a crucial railway hub connecting Hanover, Kassel, and Hildesheim, which catalyzed industrial growth. Today, the town is a center for specialized vehicle manufacturing and food processing. The historic core, with its timber-framed houses, has been carefully restored after numerous town fires, maintaining Elze's identity as a significant historical and economic node in the Leine Valley.
