Historically, Springe was a primary residence for the Hanoverian kings during the hunting season. The 19th-century Hunting Lodge (Jagdschloss) stands as a monument to this royal past and now educates visitors on the ecology of the local forests. The adjoining Saupark, a vast wooded area enclosed by a 16-kilometer stone wall, remains one of the largest protected forest parks in Northern Germany. Perhaps its most significant modern contribution is the Wisentgehege, a wildlife park that played a critical role in saving the European bison from extinction.
