Each year on the first Sunday and Monday of August Friesoythe celebrates its traditional marksmen's festival with a children's guild fest, king shooting and a festive parade.
Friesoythe proudly bears the nickname Iron Town, which stems from its centuries-old tradition of extracting iron from bog iron ore. This industrial past is kept alive today in the cityscape and in museums, with the Peace Bell in the town hall serving as a special symbol of the city. Located in Oldenburger Münsterland, Friesoythe provides a delightful mix of urban life and nature-oriented experiences. St. Mary's Church, with its striking tower, is an architectural highlight and a place of reflection. For nature lovers, the nearby Vehnemoor moorland is a fascinating destination where you can explore the unique flora and fauna of the North German Plain on well-developed paths. The city was once a member of the Hanseatic League, underlining its importance as a trading center in former times. Today, the pedestrian zone with owner-managed shops invites visitors to stroll, while regional specialties are served in local restaurants. Friesoythe is also known for its lively club culture and regular festivals such as the Schützenfest, which are deeply rooted in the local community.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
