Fritzlar, located in the Schwalm-Eder district, is a town that resonates with over 1,300 years of German history. It is famously the site where Saint Boniface felled Donar's Oak in 723 AD, a pivotal moment in the Christianization of Central Europe. The massive St. Peter's Cathedral, which rose on the site of the oak, remains the spiritual heart of the city. Fritzlar also holds a crucial place in political history; it was here in 919 that Henry the Fowler was elected King of the East Franks, an event often seen as the birth of the German nation. The medieval town center is exceptionally well-preserved, featuring a market square surrounded by ornate half-timbered houses and a nearly complete ring of defensive walls with ten remaining towers, including the imposing 'Gray Tower' (Grauer Turm). Situated near the Eder River and the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, Fritzlar gives a memorable landscape for outdoor activities. Today, the town is a thriving regional center, serving as a hub for administration, commerce, and the German military (Bundeswehr). Its streets feel like a living museum, making Fritzlar one of the most culturally significant and historically deep locations in the state of Hesse.
