Schwalmstadt is a fascinating twin-city in northern Hesse, created by the merger of the historic centers of Treysa and Ziegenhain. The town is deeply embedded in German fairy tale culture; the iconic red cap of the traditional local folk costume is said to have inspired the Brothers Grimm to write 'Little Red Riding Hood'. Ziegenhain is home to a unique water fortress, which was fortified in the 16th century by Landgrave Philipp the Magnanimous and remains a significant monument of military engineering. Treysa, meanwhile, is notable for its medieval marketplace and the striking ruins of the Totenkirche (Church of the Dead), which stands as a landmark overlooking the town. Beyond its cultural heritage, Schwalmstadt serves as an important regional center for education and healthcare. The surrounding Schwalm landscape features expansive meadows and river plains, excellent for long cycling tours and hikes that allow visitors to experience the atmosphere of German Romanticism.
