Stadtallendorf, located in Middle Hesse near Marburg, is a city with a highly unusual origin story. For centuries a quiet village, it was transformed during the Nazi era into a massive, hidden complex for explosives production, then the largest in Europe. Following the war, instead of being abandoned, the site's industrial foundations attracted major global companies, most notably Ferrero, making the city a European hub for chocolate production. Stadtallendorf only officially became a 'city' in 1960. This industrial explosion led to a rapid population growth and a high degree of cultural diversity, as thousands of international workers settled here. The town's dark history of forced labor and military production is meticulously documented at the local DIZ museum. Today, Stadtallendorf is a thriving economic center with a robust tax base, characterized by its modern urban layout interspersed with forests like the Herrenwald, providing a unique contrast between heavy industry and natural beauty.
