The Römerberg is the historic town hall square of Frankfurt am Main and has formed the center of the old town since the High Middle Ages. It is famous for the striking town hall, the 'Römer', which has been the seat of the city administration since 1405. For centuries, the square was the scene of imperial coronations, markets, and tournaments. Particularly worth seeing is the Ostzeile, a row of reconstructed half-timbered houses that reflect the city's medieval flair. In the middle of the square is the Fountain of Justice from 1543, depicting the goddess Justitia. During World War II, the Römerberg was almost completely destroyed but was faithfully rebuilt in the 1980s. Today, it is a popular meeting point for tourists and locals alike, especially during the Frankfurt Christmas Market, which has a long tradition here. The adjacent Old St. Nicholas Church completes the historic ensemble on the banks of the Main.
