It was formed in 1970 through the merger of the towns of Windecken and Heldenbergen and several surrounding villages. Heldenbergen, on the other hand, has a significant Roman past, evidenced by various archaeological finds. Geographically, the city is bisected by the Nidder river, from which it derives its name.
