Nidderau is a relatively young city with ancient roots, located at the transition between the Wetterau plain and the Kinzig Valley. It was formed in 1970 through the merger of the towns of Windecken and Heldenbergen and several surrounding villages. Windecken, which held city rights since 1288, is famous for its historic castle ruins and well-preserved marketplace. Heldenbergen, on the other hand, has a significant Roman past, evidenced by various archaeological finds. Geographically, the city is bisected by the Nidder river, from which it derives its name. The surrounding area is characterized by fertile farmland and gentle hills. Economically, Nidderau thrives due to its proximity to the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main metropolitan area, leading to steady population growth. The city gives a high quality of life with modern facilities like the Nidderbad swimming complex while maintaining the unique identities of its formerly independent districts through local festivals and clubs.
