Located directly west of Darmstadt, Griesheim is situated in the flat plains of the Hessian Ried. Widely known as the Onion City, this municipality of 27,000 residents has a deep agricultural history centered around cultivating onions and asparagus in its sandy soils. The late-summer Zwiebelmarkt honors this farming legacy with regional food stalls and local gatherings. Griesheim holds a distinct place in aviation history as the home of the August Euler Airfield, established in 1908 and recognized as the oldest preserved airfield in Germany.
