Schnoor Quarter (Germany)

Weather…

The Schnoor Quarter is Bremen's oldest surviving district, characterful visitors with its labyrinth of narrow alleys and tightly packed houses. Its name is derived from the Low German word 'Schnoor' meaning string, suggesting that the houses are lined up like pearls on a string. The oldest buildings date back to the 15th century, with many houses remodeled in Baroque or Neoclassical styles during the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally situated on the banks of the Balge, a tributary of the Weser River, the quarter was home to fishermen, river boatmen, and craftsmen. Today, the Schnoor is a cultural hub featuring numerous art galleries, handicraft workshops, small museums, and cozy cafes. Despite its tourist popularity, the district has retained its historical charm, as cars cannot fit through the narrow streets. Meticulous restoration in the 1960s saved the Schnoor from planned demolition and turned it into a landmark of the city.
