Gransee is situated on a ground moraine plateau in northern Brandenburg and is considered one of the best-preserved historic towns in the region. Founded in the 13th century, Gransee quickly developed into a prosperous agricultural town. A milestone in its history was the year 1810, when the funeral procession of the beloved Prussian Queen Luise made a stop here, an event commemorated today by the famous Schinkel Monument on Schloßplatz. The medieval city wall, complete with towers and gates, encloses the town center almost entirely and continues to define its appearance. Beyond its historical significance, Gransee is a key economic hub for northern Brandenburg, particularly in its role as the administrative seat of the Amt Gransee and associated municipalities. The lush surrounding area, rich in forests and water, including the nearby Lake Stechlin, also makes the town a gateway for nature-oriented tourism.
