Berlin-Tempelhof Airport was one of Germany's first commercial airports and is today regarded as a world-class architectural monument. The current monumental airport building was constructed between 1936 and 1941 according to plans by architect Ernst Sagebiel in the style of National Socialist architecture. With a total length of over 1.2 kilometers, it was for a long time one of the largest buildings in the world by floor area. Tempelhof gained historical fame particularly during the Berlin Airlift of 1948/49, when Western Allies supplied the blockaded city with vital goods through the airport; the arriving aircraft were affectionately dubbed "Rosinenbomber" (Raisin Bombers) by the Berlin populace. Following the cessation of flight operations in 2008, Tempelhofer Feld was opened to the public as one of the world's largest inner-city open spaces. Today, the area serves as a recreational park, while the building is used for trade fairs, events, and as a hub for startup companies.
