Wiesloch is strategically located south of Heidelberg, serving as a gateway between the Rhine Valley and the Kraichgau hills. Its history is deeply rooted in medieval mining, specifically for silver and lead, which shaped the town's early economic structure. The town gained international fame through a pioneering event in 1888: Bertha Benz, on her historic long-distance journey from Mannheim to Pforzheim, stopped at the local pharmacy to purchase ligroin to fuel her motorcar. This act turned the Wiesloch City Pharmacy into the first gas station in history. Modern Wiesloch is a spirited economic hub, dominated by major players like Heidelberger Druckmaschinen and the financial services firm MLP. Despite its industrial importance, the town retains a characterful atmosphere with a well-preserved historic center featuring half-timbered houses and scenic vineyards that produce renowned Baden wines, reflecting a balance between technological heritage and rural beauty.
