Meersburg, perched on the northern shores of Lake Constance, is a jewel of medieval and baroque architecture. The town is uniquely split into a lower lakefront area and an upper historic district, connected by winding alleys and steep stairs. Dominating the skyline is the 'Alte Burg' (Old Castle), traditionally dated back to the 7th century and famously the oldest inhabited fortress in Germany. Adjacent to it stands the 'Neues Schloss' (New Palace), an 18th-century Baroque residence that once housed the Prince-Bishops of Constance. Meersburg holds deep literary significance as the final home of the acclaimed German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. The surrounding hills are clad in vineyards that benefit from the lake's light reflection, producing renowned white and red wines. The town's economy is heavily driven by tourism and wine production, supported by a frequent car ferry link to the city of Constance. With its cobblestone streets and spectacular views of the Swiss Alps across the water, Meersburg remains one of Germany's most romantic and visited lakeside destinations.
