Breisach am Rhein is a town in Baden-Württemberg on the Upper Rhine, widely visible due to its prominent location on a volcanic rock. The town's landmark is St. Stephen's Cathedral, a Romanesque-Gothic collegiate church that towers high above the river and houses significant art treasures such as the mural by Martin Schongauer. Breisach's history is shaped by its strategic importance as a bridgehead and fortress, which for centuries was frequently contested between France and the Holy Roman Empire. In the early modern period, Breisach was considered one of the strongest fortresses in Europe. Today, the town is a significant center of viticulture, particularly in the Kaiserstuhl and Tuniberg regions, and is home to one of the largest wine cellars in Europe. A particularly historic event occurred in 1950, when the citizens of Breisach voted by an overwhelming majority for a united Europe in a historic referendum, earning the town the title of the first European model municipality. The old town features pretty alleys and views across the Rhine plain to the Vosges Mountains and the Black Forest.
