Gunjur Turtle Conservation (Gambia)

Weather…

The Gunjur Turtle Conservation project is located on the southern coast of The Gambia and is primarily managed by the Gunjur Environmental Protection and Development Group (GEPADG). Established in 1992, this initiative aims to protect the nesting sites of endangered sea turtles, particularly Green and Loggerhead turtles, from poaching and habitat loss. Volunteers and local conservationists patrol the beaches during the nesting season between August and November to relocate eggs to protected hatcheries. The center also serves as an educational hub for the local community and international visitors, focusing on the importance of the marine ecosystem. Through community engagement, the previously common practice of harvesting turtle eggs has been drastically reduced. The preservation of coastal vegetation is essential for the long-term survival of these species in the region.
