Mount Tandou in southwestern Gabon is a prominent peak within the Mayombe mountain range, which runs parallel to the Atlantic coast. Reaching an elevation of approximately 850 meters, it represents a significant landmark in the Ogooué-Maritime province. The mountain's geology is characterized by Precambrian rock formations, including quartzites and schists, typical of the Mayombe massif's ranges. Mont Tandou is cloaked in primary rainforest that exhibits exceptional biodiversity, including numerous endemic plant species. The climatic conditions on the mountain are marked by high humidity and frequent mist formation, which has contributed to the development of a unique montane forest ecosystem. Various primate species and the endangered forest elephant inhabit the region around Mount Tandou. Although the mountain is of great interest to geologists and biologists, it remains largely unexplored due to its dense vegetation and challenging terrain. Protecting this area is of central importance for maintaining the ecological corridor between the Mayombe Mountains and the interior of Gabon.
