Mayumba is a coastal town located in the Nyanga Province in the far southwest of Gabon, situated on a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and the Banio Lagoon. The town is world-renowned for the Mayumba National Park, established in 2002, which protects the most important nesting site for leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) in all of Africa. Historically, Mayumba served as a major port for the slave trade and later for the export of ivory and valuable timber. In contemporary times, the town is the focus of an ambitious deep-water port infrastructure project intended to facilitate the export of minerals from the interior. The local economy relies on artisanal fishing, forestry, and emerging eco-tourism, which draws visitors for whale watching and turtle monitoring. Its isolated location near the Congolese border has preserved a unique cultural identity deeply connected to the sea and lagoon resources.
