Tetiaroa Bird Sanctuary (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Tetiaroa Bird Sanctuary is an atoll comprising 13 motus located 53 km north of Tahiti. It serves as a crucial nesting site for seabirds such as the Tahiti swallow (Hirundo tahitica) and the red-footed booby (Sula sula). The islands are surrounded by coral reefs and feature unique vegetation including Pisonia trees and pandanus. Established in 1991, the sanctuary protects bird populations after earlier human activities like coconut plantations disrupted habitats. The University of California runs a research station here focusing on marine biology and ornithology. The atoll spans about 6 km² total, with a land area of only 2 km². Its lagoon is rich in fish species like tuna and barracuda. Access is restricted to scientific purposes to minimize disturbance to breeding colonies.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for seabird watching is during the breeding season from April to October. In these months countless birds nest on Motu Tahuna Iti and chicks are visible.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning hours are most productive when birds are flying out and in for feeding. Late afternoon also provides good opportunities as colonies settle down and light becomes softer.
📜
Etiquette
Entering the nesting island Motu Tahuna Iti is strictly prohibited to avoid disturbing sensitive nests. Keep at least 50 meters distance from the boat and avoid loud noises.
🎒
What to bring
A high-quality binocular is essential for observing birds from a distance without disturbing them. A camera with telephoto lens and a notebook for bird identification are also recommended.
🧭
Getting there
Tetiaroa atoll is only reachable by plane from Tahiti or private boat. Motu Tahuna Iti itself may not be landed on, but guided boat tours around the island are offered by local operators.
🦌
What to expect
Seabird watching requires patience as the birds often fly at larger distances or feed out at sea. Plan for an extended time on the water and enjoy the stillness of the lagoon.
