Point Venus Lighthouse (French Polynesia)

Weather…

The Point Venus Lighthouse, located on the Mahina peninsula of Tahiti, is a landmark of profound historical and scientific significance. Completed in 1867, the lighthouse was designed by Thomas Stevenson, a renowned lighthouse engineer and father of author Robert Louis Stevenson. The 25-meter-tall square stone tower stands on the site where Captain James Cook observed the Transit of Venus in 1769, a pivotal astronomical event used to calculate the size of the solar system. As the only lighthouse on Tahiti, it has long served as a vital navigational aid for ships entering Matavai Bay. The site is also historically important as the landing point for the first London Missionary Society members in 1797. Surrounded by a beautiful park and a famous black sand beach, the lighthouse remains one of the most photographed structures in French Polynesia, blending Victorian engineering with the rich maritime history of the Pacific exploration era.
