Eiao Island Nature Reserve (French Polynesia)

Weather…

Eiao Nature Reserve on Eiao Island (Marquesas) protects 43 km² of dry forests, coastal cliffs, and rich marine life. The uninhabited island is a crucial breeding ground for the Marquesan shearwater (Puffinus nativitatis) and the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). Established in 1991, the reserve conserves native flora such as the Eiao crocodile tree (Pandanus eiaoensis). Cliffs reach heights of up to 300 meters. The island previously suffered from goat grazing, which damaged the ecosystem. The reserve is administered by the French Polynesian government. Access is strictly regulated. Surrounding waters are rich in fish species and coral reefs. Research teams regularly visit to monitor populations.
