Nîmes, often called the 'French Rome,' is located in the Occitanie region and is home to some of the world's best-preserved Roman monuments. The city's crown jewel is the Arena of Nîmes, a 1st-century Roman amphitheater that remains in active use for events and festivals today. Equally impressive is the Maison Carrée, a perfectly preserved ancient temple that was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023. Nîmes flourished during the reign of Emperor Augustus, a legacy reflected in the Tour Magne, a remnant of the original Roman city walls perched atop Mont Cavalier. Beyond its ancient splendor, the city is famous for the Jardins de la Fontaine, one of Europe's first public parks, designed around ancient Roman springs in the 18th century. Nîmes also holds a global textile legacy as the birthplace of denim fabric, originating as 'de Nîmes.' The city blends Provençal charm with a profound respect for its two-thousand-year history. Nearby stands the famous Pont du Gard, part of the massive aqueduct that once supplied the city with water. Today, Nîmes is a dynamic cultural hub where southern French lifestyle meets monumental history and contemporary architectural projects.
