Tucked away in the Var department just a few kilometers inland from the glamorous Gulf of Saint-Tropez, Cogolin is a traditional town renowned for its specialized craftsmanship. Unlike its glitzy coastal neighbors, Cogolin has maintained a deeply rooted artisanal heritage. The town is internationally recognized for manufacturing premium briar wood smoking pipes, hand-knotted carpets, and precision-cut reeds used globally for woodwind instruments. The historic center features narrow, shaded streets leading up to the 11th-century Saint-Sauveur church and the remnants of an old feudal castle, highlighted by the Tour de l'Horloge clock tower which has clear views over the surrounding Massif des Maures. To the east, the commune extends to the sea at Port Cogolin, a modern marina complex distinct from the historic village. The surrounding hills are thickly forested with cork oaks and chestnut trees, providing excellent terrain for hikers who want to experience the rugged nature of the Maures mountain range while staying close to the Mediterranean coast.
